LOUISVILLE, Kent. - For the first time ever, Great Lakes Christian College has won an NCCAA DII regional tournament.
Women's soccer defeated Johnson (Tennessee) in the final of the Mideast regional on Saturday, 3-0 to clinch their berth in the national championship tournament in Kissimmee, Florida from November 18-20.
Great Lakes opened up the scoring in the 24th minute as Emily Rector scored a goal off an assist from Ashley Owens in the 24th minute, which gave them a 1-0 halftime lead.
Rector scored again in the 65th, putting back a rebound off a shot by Randi Fitzgerald which was saved to make it 2-0. Fitzgerald would get her goal 11 minutes later to put the match beyond all doubt and clinch the title for Great Lakes.
Both teams tooks 12 shots, but GLCC put 10 on frame to Johnson's three. Malia Fry made three saves for Great Lakes, playing the entire game and taking home the clean sheet. Jailie Bullock made seven saves for Johnson.
Great Lakes will enter the national tournament as the one-seed and will face four-seed and South region tournament champion Trinity Baptist in the national semifinal on November 18 at noon.
